Standards and Guidelines: TAFEcat RSS Feeds

When Not To Use an RSS Feed

Don't include an RSS feed if the number of recently published and purchased items in the subject is low.

TAFEcat RSS Feed - Essentials    Required

Create the search
  • Use the subject search as the primary search. Search for genuine subject headings or a combination of genuine subject headings. Use keyword search only for niche and difficult subject areas.
  • Sort the results by Publication date descending.
  • Click the RSS feed symbol on the button showing the number of results for the search.

  • Copy the URL for the page displayed.
Create the box

RSS feed boxes are used only on the Welcome page. They should not be used on topic pages.

  1. Create a box and title it: New Resources Available
  2. Add rich text to the top of the box : Latest resources on [full subject search- linked] - borrow now, reserve or ask for an interlibrary loan (ILL).  Link the subject area in the text to the TAFEcat permalink of your search e.g. Furniture making which allows users to see the full search result list. This also helps with maintenance. You can easily review the search parameters that you have used. Don't forget to set the link target to New Window (_blank)
  3. Add an RSS feed option to the box and add the feed as per the instructions below.
Enter the details in the RSS form
  • Nameadd a name that allows you to easily identify the feed and the associated Libguide e.g. Commercial cookery LibGuide: quantity cooking or food service management. Do not use generic names such as New titles.
  • Feed URL: use the URL from the search previously conducted.
  • The recommended number of Items to Display is between 5 to 10. You can adjust the number of displayed items to the space available in order to line up the boxes of both columns.
  • Description Display: use Click on  icon. Do not use "Display beneath item".
