Standards and Guidelines: Mapping and Redirecting Guides, Pages and Boxes

Why Map or Redirect?

Mapping boxes and pages or redirecting topic pages to existing guides saves on work time and reduces duplication and maintenance of assets.

Extreme caution is needed when deleting mapped items

Mapping Topic Pages

Use when a topic page you want to create is adequately covered by an existing topic page on another guide.

Mapping the page keeps your user within the guide. The user will not be aware that the content is duplicated elsewhere.

If you want additional resources added to the mapped page, you will need to contact the relevant guide editor to discuss how this is best done to meet the need of both guides.

Examples:

Mental Health: Advocacy shared with Counselling: Brief Interventions

To map a topic page:

  • Click the 'Add new page' tab from the top menu.
  • Choose the 'Reuse Existing Page' option.
  • Locate the guide and page you wish to map.
  • Select the position within your guide (i.e. Topic page tab).
  • Click on Save not Copy.

Mapping Boxes

Use when an already created box or series of boxes on another guide covers what you want to include.

Note that copying rather than mapping boxes creates multiple assets, and changes made in the original boxes (like new editions etc) will not be reflected in the new box.

To map a box:

  • Choose 'Reuse Existing Box' option.
  • Find the guide and page you wish to map.
  • Add the box name only if you are changing the title of the original box.
  • Select the position of your box on the page.
  • Click on Save not copy.

Redirecting a Topic Page to Another LibGuide

Use when the topic you want to add is adequately covered by an existing guide

The link takes the guide user to a new guide and new window. They can navigate back to their main guide easily whilst also being able to find resources and related topics on the new guide.

If you want additional resources added to the redirected guide, you will need to contact the relevant guide editor to discuss how this is best done to meet the need of both guides.

Examples:

Aboriginal Sites Works – Agricultural Chemicals

Business and Management – Project Management

To add a topic page from another LibGuide:

  • Use the new page option ( the plus symbol tab)  and create a new blank page.
  • Name the page for the name of the topic you will be directed to and Save.
  • Click on PAGE settings link and Select Redirect URL. Add the URL of the guide you wish to redirect to.
  • Tick Open redirect URL in a new window?

Existing topic page

  • Navigate to the page.
  • Click on the PAGE settings link.
  • Click on Page Properties and rename the page to the name of the guide you are redirecting to.
  • Click Redirect URL.
  • Add the URL of the guide you wish to redirect to.
  • Tick Open redirect URL in a new window?

DO NOT DELETE a Mapped Page or Box

Deleting a page will permanently remove the page from our LibApps and cannot be undone.

  • When deleting a top-level page, all of its sub-pages will also be deleted. If you want to keep the sub-pages, please move them under a different top-level page or reorder them as top-level pages.
    • This also applies to top-level mapped pages. If you remove a mapping for a top-level page that has sub-pages, all of its sub-pages will be deleted.
  • When deleting a page, all Link, Media/Widget, Book, Document/File, RSS Feed, Poll, LibAnswers Widget, and LibWizard Item assets will remain in your assets library, so they can still be used.
  • However, all boxes and rich text/HTML content items will be deleted. If they were being reused in other guides, then they will no longer appear.
  • Statistics for deleted pages are retained and will appear in reports with its original ID number and a title of [deleted].
