Standards and Guidelines: Numbers

Numbers

In general, use numerals to express numbers 10 and above, and words to express numbers below 10. Consider on a case by case basis whether to follow the general guidelines or if an exception applies.

Duration

hr.
Duration of videos and DVDs e.g. 1 hr. Do not add an 's' e.g. hrs. -always use hr. Do not add 'duration' before the number of hours.

min.

Duration of videos and DVDs e.g. 1 hr. 31 min. or 14 min. Do not add an 's' e.g. mins. - always use min. Do not add 'duration' before the number of minutes.

  • Do not use 70 min. Use 1 hr. 10 min. 
  • Do not use 1 hr. 0 min. Use 1 hr. only.
  • Do not use 2 hr. 05 min. Use 2 hr. 5 min.
  • Do not use 1hr. 4min. Use 1 hr. 4 min.

Dates

Dates should be written as the number of the day, followed by the name of the month and the number of the year. The day of the week is optional.

For example:

1 March 2024 or Friday 1 March 2024

Times

In free text use the convention applied in the TAFE NSW opening hours LibGuide. 

  • Use a full stop not a colon
  • Add the minutes
  • Leave a space between minutes and am/pm.

E.g. 9.00 am to 5.30 pm
