Status Note

Published: Content approved by Group 2 members.

Use of Symbols and Emojis

  • LibGuides allow the use of standard symbols and emojis but they should be restricted to titles or descriptions of content items where they have been included or including them adds value.
  • Use the symbol or emoji if it is required and removing it would change meaning of the title or description.
  • Please note that some symbols and characters do not render correctly in PDFs and other documents.
  • Symbols and emojis will not work well in search engines. At best they will be ignored.

Symbols in YouTube Titles

For YouTube videos capture the title listed under the video and replace punctuation as appropriate. eg. Replace punctuation such as double dashes (- -), pipes (|), square brackets ([ ]), etc with colons :

For example: Replace a pipe (|) in YouTube video titles with a colon.

Symbols and Emojis e.g. No-Sweat 😅, Trade Mark ™ and Copyright © (Examples)

In this example the symbol is considered useful because not many people know what an ankh looks like.

In the following example removing the emoji will not change the meaning of the title. Consider removing the emoji because it makes this website stand out from others within the same box which are equally important.

The symbols in the following title need to be retained because the meaning of the title would change significantly when removing them.
