Standards and Guidelines: Subject Lists

TAFEcat Subject Headings Searches   Required

  • Use the subject search as primary search. Search for genuine subject headings as provided under subject term in the TAFEcat records.
  • Remove special signs when searching for subject headings e.g. Aboriginal Australians--Land tenure search for Aboriginal Australians Land tenure.
  • Use keywords only for niche and difficult subject areas such as specific software e.g. Microsoft Office. Search for the software name using the subject field because the software name is recorded in the title subject. Using the subject field search will also remove unwanted results such as LinkedIn.com videos.
  • Use only subject heading search results that retrieved at least 3 items.
  • If a lot of items are retrieved limit by date.
  • Sort by descending for newest to oldest.
  • Add the genuine subject headings exactly as displayed on the TAFEcat e.g. Native title (Australia) without the full stop. Aboriginal Australians--Land tenure
  • List only a maximum of 10 subjects.
