Smarthinking Support: Teaching and Smarthinking

Why Smarthinking?

Smarthinking is online tutoring and writing help that supports our students with academic writing and foundational help in the subjects of reading and writing, maths and statistics, business, science and more.

The service is available 24/7 and it’s particularly helpful when teachers and other support staff are not available, during break, late at nights and on weekends.

The main role of the Smarthinking tutors is to provide feedback related to structure, grammar, referencing, punctuation and spelling and support students to overcome roadblocks while studying.

Smarthinking tutors won’t give answers to students. They help students learn and understand, so they can work independently. They provide feedback, practical and relevant examples, detailed notes and comments so that students better understand what needs to be done to improve their written submissions and/or assessment tasks.

When Smarthinking tutors identify that further assistance from a teacher is considered beneficial, the student is advised to reach out to their teacher/s.

Smarthinking is an addition to the wide variety of study support services that TAFE NSW already offer to students with their learning needs, so students have the flexibility to choose the study support that best suit them and their needs.

TAFE NSW Teacher Testimonial

'This service has been invaluable to number of our students who have found not just the afterhours services but the one on one, drop in and small group learning and tuition invaluable.

As their trainer assessor and course coordinator I firmly believe that without this service and support many students would not have succeeded in obtaining their certificates.

In fact, there were a few students who were struggling that were directed towards this service who chose not utilise Smarthinking when it would have most been beneficial to them and sadly it was these students who did not get over the line.

Not having this service may have a negative impact on students, people’s lives who are otherwise engaged or reengaging with the education system. Lifechanging.

Smarthinking is a big part of our tool kit and oft utilised.'
